The 10 events
World Sailing manages sailing at the Olympic Games. National authorities such as US Sailing train, select and manage their own Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The program for Los Angeles 2028 has 10 events, each using the same equipment as Paris 2024:
| Type | Event | Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Men's and women's kite | Formula Kite |
| Board | Men's and women's windsurfing | iQFOiL |
| Dinghy | Men's dinghy | ILCA 7 |
| Dinghy | Women's dinghy | ILCA 6 |
| Dinghy | Mixed dinghy | 470 |
| Skiff | Men's and women's skiff | 49er and 49erFX |
| Multihull | Mixed multihull | Nacra 17 |
Two equipment notes. In May 2022 World Sailing voted to keep the kite, mixed 470 and Nacra 17 events, rejecting proposals to replace kiteboarding and drop the Nacra 17. And from January 2025, iQFOiL sail sizes changed: men moved from 9 m2 to 8 m2 sails, and women from 8 m2 to a new 7.3 m2 design.
Paris 2024 (Marseille): results
Paris 2024 sailing was held at Marseille Marina, and kiteboarding made its Olympic debut there. World Sailing says 19 nations won medals across the 10 events, more than the 18 at Beijing 2008.
| Event | Gold | Silver | Bronze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men's windsurfing (iQFOiL) | Tom Reuveny (ISR) | Grae Morris (AUS) | Luuc van Opzeeland (NED) |
| Women's windsurfing (iQFOiL) | Marta Maggetti (ITA) | Sharon Kantor (ISR) | Emma Wilson (GBR) |
| Men's kite (Formula Kite) | Valentin Bontus (AUT) | Toni Vodisek (SLO) | Maximilian Maeder (SGP) |
| Women's kite (Formula Kite) | Eleanor Aldridge (GBR) | Lauriane Nolot (FRA) | Annelous Lammerts (NED) |
| Men's dinghy (ILCA 7) | Matt Wearn (AUS) | Pavlos Kontides (CYP) | Stefano Peschiera (PER) |
| Women's dinghy (ILCA 6) | Marit Bouwmeester (NED) | Anne-Marie Rindom (DEN) | Line Flem Hoest (NOR) |
| Men's skiff (49er) | Diego Botin and Florian Trittel (ESP) | Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie (NZL) | Ian Barrows and Hans Henken (USA) |
| Women's skiff (49erFX) | Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz (NED) | Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler (SWE) | Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon (FRA) |
| Mixed multihull (Nacra 17) | Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti (ITA) | Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco (ARG) | Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson (NZL) |
| Mixed dinghy (470) | Lara Vadlau and Lukas Maehr (AUT) | Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka (JPN) | Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson (SWE) |
A few results stood out. Stefano Peschiera's bronze was Peru's first Olympic sailing medal, and Max Maeder's bronze was Singapore's only medal of the 2024 Games. Reading down the gold column, the Netherlands, Italy and Austria each won two sailing golds. World Sailing's own review of the regatta says the Netherlands topped the sailing medal table, with two golds and two bronzes.
